RIP Walter Hawkins
The music industry lost a legend today in the incomparable Walter Hawkins. I know personally when I heard "Love Alive" for the first time I was forever changed. I don't want to speak for Donnie but I know Walter was one of his mentors. Walter Hawkins is one of the main reasons we created this second hour of the Donnie McClurkin Show - "Gospel Gold." We wanted to play songs like "Changed" and "Goin Up Yonder"...the old treasures that help build the foundation for Gospel music. Our prayers go out to the whole Hawkins family. How has Walter Hawkins influenced your life? Do you remember the first time you heard Walter Hawkins music?

Simplysaved I am very sorry to hear about Bishop Walter Hawkins passing away earlier today. His ministry has impacted a generation and been a blessing to me personally. I was honored to sing as part of the Nashville Chamber Orchestra Gospel Choir with him during Thanksgiving 2005. We were ALL so thrilled and blessed! He and his son were very friendly with us and down to earth. I knew that he had been struggling with cancer and that God gave him favor to live longer than expected--and that the past few weeks have been especially difficult. My heartfelt prayers are with the Hawkins Family and for all of those who knew him personally or was blessed by his ministry, especially Pastor McClurkin. Blessings!
FLM Lady D The first time I heard Walter, the song Changed struck a note. Being an abused child and going through the motions for 22 years was a tough battle, but after hearing his song and Donnie's song Stand, it has helped me to Change. On the spiritual level, I was able to forgive and heal. Although I didn't know him personally, I felt like I did, because of the impact his songs had on my life as I was going through. I thank God for these Men of God allowing the Lord to use them in the way HE wanted too. I'm sure they have impacted souls around the globe and that is our mission, to compell the souls to come to Christ. I truly believe Walter has given his all and now he is resting in the Lord. My aim is to see him and all the pioneers that have went on before us, in that great getting up morning. Most of all I want to see Jesus in peace! I am praying with and for the Hawkins family, extended family and friend. I am also praying for you Donnie. I trust God will carry you through this time. Shed your tears, feel the lost, but be encouraged, knowing that God makes NO MISTAKES. He promised to prepare a place for His prepared people and He took Walter because He was prepared. It is not good-bye, it is I'll See You In the Rapture. Love you with the Love of Christ! God Bless
Dona Halliday A life that was lived so well and impacted so many for God's kingdom can only be celebrated. I love Walter Hawkins' music and O Happy Day was my childhood favorite. My sympathies to his family and friends who though they understand he is now in the presence of his God still grieve his departure.

Shameka G! I knew from Donnie that he was sick, but not to such an extent that was near passing! WOW! My heart goes out! This is why we all need love because we never know. God is going to ask us who we loved and whether or not we did all we knew how for them despite how they may have lived. He is also going to ask if we loved despite what ppl may have had to say about them. I want His answer to be well done Shameka.
Tina Good morning and God bless us with His grace and peace in this hour.I pray for the family and friends of Bishop Walter Hawkins. I personally and unfortunately, haven't been acquainted with his ministry until lately. I pray for those close to him, including Pastor Donnie. For we know we do not grieve as the world grieves, but we have hope in Jesus Christ, He gives us peace and comforts us, knowing that He has already prepared a place for us in Heaven! And that we will see them on the other side!

Karen My prayers go out to the Hawkins family. May God strengthen and comfort them. I grew up on the songs that the Hawkins family sang they helped lay my foundation in Christ as a teenager and strenghthen my faith their music was truly the Word in Song. As I sit here now listening to those songs, it takes me back to when I first fell in love with Jesus. Songs like He's just that kind of friend, Changed, I'm going thru, Be grateful, It's Marvelous, and oh so many more. I thank God for Bishop Hawkins' life and legacy and his songs that touched our hearts.
Bonita God is..WOW! I still sing in times of testing Goin up Yonder and it still brings me to tears. God has called love home.
AR As soon as I heard radio stations yesterday a.m. playing Walter Hawkins songs, although I had not yet heard, I thought, He must have passed. It was a strange adjustment. Growing up I was more familiar with Tremaine's voice. I recall at 12 yrs old our choir director telling me I was going to sing Goin Up Yonder. My adult cousin had owned it for some time when it was current, until she went out of the country on military leave. I was in the children's choir and was thinking this lady doesn't really want me singing this grown up song. And I definitely wasn't going to attempt those high notes. But the director never asked she told and said you can. Shockingly as quiet as I was during those years, I did. But my best memory is Change. My cousin sang that one too, but before she came back to the states, another member of the Heavenly Gospels their choir, sang it. It was a hot Sunday Eve service. We attended a church in the country, and use to be allowed to run around and play in the church yard during eve concerts back then. The church was small and had no a/c. They would keep the church doors open we could pop our heads in, or watch from the foyer anytime we felt like it. I came in from playing and they began singing Change. The lead singer just lost it, broke down crying, then the whole choir, then some of the congregation. It was a powerful moment, but strange to me. My young mind couldn't grasp what caused all of these tears I could feel the power, but didn't quite understand why it made her cry. Plus, I wanted to hear the rest of the song!(LOL) But a few years ago I bought a Tremaine CD and Change came on. I broke down crying as I sang along. I understand now the testimony of being changed. The overwhelming appreciation, power, and miracle of what if feels like to understand being changed completely on the inside. The way you think. They way you talk. The way you walk. The way you live. I now understand why the other singer, the wife of another cousin could not get through that song. Because today, I almost never can. I later became familiary with Walter and Edwin's names learning how they were all connected, his songs, my goodness. He was to gospel during my adolescent and teen years what Michael Jackson later was to pop. It seemed everything Walter did turned to Gold.
Deborah D. Wilkerson My condolescences go out to the Hawkins family. I also extend condolescences to Pastor McClurkin for losing a great mentor. I have been influenced by Bishop Hawkins by songs like change, I have ministered with my choir that song and I can identify with the change that has come over me. The most recent stage of my life identifies with the Grateful song. I am very grateful for all God being the sole Provider and Protector of my life. Blessings

Deborah D. Wilkerson Pastor Donnie, I am identifying with your pain of losing a really close friend and mentor. I want to pray for you. Dear Lord, I thank you for Pastor Donnies heart and the love that he has shared with Bishop Walter Hawkins. Thank you for the countless times of heart to heart conversations. The times of laughter. The times of sharpening as iron sharpens iron. I pray for Pastor Donnies strength as he, the Hawkins family, friends and the Christian Community mourn a great loss. Lord, I thank you that Bishop Hawkins had an opportunity to mentor Pastor Donnie and how you will use Pastor Donnie to carry out Bishop Hawkins legacy just like his family members and so many others that gleened from him. Please Lord allow Pastor Donnie to grieve well, increase his quiet times with you because only you Lord can heal the deep pain that Pastor Donnie is feeling at this time. I seal this prayer in your name Jesus. I pray in faith knowing without a shadow of doubt that Pastor Donnie will make it through this difficult time by your grace and love Lord. Thank you for hearing my prayers Lord for the man of God and all that are grieving a loss of this legend...Bishop Walter Hawkins. Love you pastor Donnie.
Deborah D. Wilkerson I am reminded of the interview on TBN whereby Pastor Donnie was interviewing Bishop Walter Hawkins. Bishop Hawkins shared his love and joy for his congregation. Also, he shared that his greatest accomplishment is seeing God use him to change another's life. He had an amazing ability to see a hurting individual's brokenness and love them into righteousness. Now, that's God! He truly was an awesome pastor as well and I am praying for the Hawkins family and I am praying for his sheep who just lost an awesome undershepherd. I thank the Lord for the covering of the Great Shepherd which tells me that those that are in mourning will be comforted. Pastor Donnie I heard you on the radio show and you sounded stronger and I heard you say that doing the tribute to Bishop Walter Hawkins was part of the healing process. Thank you for allowing yourself to grieve well and opening up a door for those that love Bishop Hawkins to grieve well also. Blessings, Peace and Love!
